Christian Kumpf: visionary, aesthete, dandy, poet, auteur, artist, human. Along with Jaspar Reynolds, he dazzled the artosphere at Art Basel in 2008 when his piece, "Reptilian Ennui", sold to famed hedge fund mogul Rutherford Wilder for $12,000,000.00. His latest project, "Psychenaut", will take the human species to the moon and beyond. He is a Psychedelian and we are proud to count him amongst our tribe.
Christian, Jaspar and I sailed down the Congo River together in search of the ghost of Conrad's Kurtz. We took no anti-malarial medication, but chewed on the root-bark of Tabernanthe iboga, whose yellow-ish roots contain a psychedeliscope of indole alkaloids, the most exquisite of which is, of course, ibogaine: that little tiny monster which lays dormant at its highest concentration in the root-bark waiting to set your synapses free.
With an oh-so-bitter flavor, the bark acts as an anesthetic in the mouth, causing a cool-numbness akin to the South American white-gold dust that our noses have become so fond of. Oneirogen: a creator of dreams, from the Greek roots (pun intended) oneiros for “dream” and gen for “to create”, it’s the root beer of the gods. We watched the riparian shores of the Congo pass by as dreamscapes danced across the horizon in a slow, hypnotic parade of psychedelia.
Cannibals danced with rattles made of skulls and we floated down that river, the three of us, dazzled with ibogaine on the brain.
